Colorado Shooting Suspect Charged With 24 Counts of Murder

James Holmes, the lone suspect in a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, was formally charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder at a hearing on Monday morning.

Holmes, age 24, allegedly opened fire at a July 20 midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, leaving 12 dead and 58 wounded before surrendering to police.
Holmes was also charged with one count of possession of explosives, as police discovered soon after the shooting that his apartment was rigged to detonate.
The murder charges encompassed 12 counts of first-degree murder and 12 counts of murder with extreme indifference, according to Reuters.
 No cameras were allowed in the courtroom during Monday’s hearing, as District Chief Judge William Sylvester argued that live media coverage could interfere with the legal process. A single videocamera from a local news outlet was allowed during Holmes’ first courtroom appearance last week, but intense interest in the live stream generated enough traffic to knock the transmission offline.
Holmes’ legal defense is expected to hinge on his mental condition leading up to and at the time of the shooting.
